在古羅馬帝國(guó)時(shí)期，羅馬皇帝身邊的親信往往能得到皇帝的寵愛，掌管帝國(guó)的軍政大權(quán)，有時(shí)還會(huì)出任地方官吏，最常見的是擔(dān)任某行省的總督。歐洲大陸部分國(guó)家的伯爵爵位名稱就出自拉丁文的comes，意為“侍從”。
